PeeP on Pop- Psychedelic Horseshit

Psychedelic Horseshit- Laced (Fat Cat- 2011)
~by Gabe McBride

Even if you’ve never heard Psychedelic Horseshit before, I bet you know what they sound like. Laced is a grab bag mish mash of art-damaged punk clamor, apathetic/sarcastic vocal “stylings”, sheets of glimmery guitar noise, snarky samples, afro-Caribbean rhythm pulse, blips, bleeps, and bloops all tossed together, at least at first listen with a minimal amount of consideration for easily recognizable song structure.

What makes the record work is a sense of cohesion from song to song, even if the tracks don’t sound alike. Frontman Matt Whitehurst’s vocals are as endearing as they are annoying, and I’m not sure that’s a backhanded compliment. The overall feeling I have listening to Laced, is that the band has done a ton of work, all while making it sound like they aren’t trying at all, which is quite a feat really. In the end, the record tests the boundaries of pop, and the limitations of noise, all set up as some elaborate con job. It’s totally psychedelic. And TOTALLY horseshit.
